Heather Chadwick is an old soul in a 20 year old body. She takes care of her mother who suffers from depression, manages their boathouse rentals and waitresses at a local restaurant/bar. So Heather sees it as a godsend when Noah Cavallari rents the boathouse for the whole summer, thus the title “When August Ends”.
The minute Heather lays eyes on Noah she falls into insta-lust with her older more taciturn tenant. Even though he returns her interest, 34 year old Noah believes that, given their age difference, acting on his feelings would be inappropriate. As their friendship develops, the mutual attraction blossoms too but the road Heather and Noah travel is a rocky one and author Penelope Ward throws in a couple of tricky curves that make it even more hazardous. Ward created two delightfully engaging and original characters in an equally original plot that was one of my more enjoyable reads of late. Heather and Noah deliver the narrative in alternating chapters and their story moves along smoothly, with just enough sexual tension to keep the reader flipping pages right to the end. Ward definitely knows what her readers want and she always delivers. Four and a half stars.
